Why not an off-the-shelf program?
If something off the shelf does the job, buy it — we will tell you so. Custom earns its cost when your process is your advantage, or when nothing off the shelf fits it and you would end up bending one with fifteen add-ons and three spreadsheets alongside.
What if we stop working together?
You take the code, the database and the keys, because they were yours from the start. We also write down how it is set up and how it deploys, so whoever comes next can carry on without us.
How big does it have to be to be worth it?
The practical threshold is not size, it is repetition. If something is done by hand every day and a mistake costs money, it is worth it even when small. If it happens twice a year, it probably is not, and we will say so.
